Embracing the World is a global humanitarian network operating through a decentralized model, empowering local groups to address community-specific needs.

While highly effective in delivering aid—recognized by the United Nations—its communication strategy lacked clarity. Volunteers and external audiences struggled to grasp the organization’s full scope, leading to inconsistent messaging and missed engagement opportunities.

Challenge

The organization’s website and promotional materials failed to convey the breadth of its initiatives. With over 100+ active projects worldwide, there was no unified way to describe its work. If you asked 10 different volunteers what Embracing the World did, you would get 10 different answers. This lack of a cohesive narrative limited visibility, volunteer advocacy, and global recognition.

Solution

As a designer focused on paradigm shifts and complex identity challenges, I led a remote, cross-functional team—including designers, developers, and content strategists—to redesign the website and refine the organization’s storytelling.

The core of the challenge was developing a clear, intuitive taxonomy: a structured yet flexible system that could capture the vast scope of their work without overwhelming users.

I conducted a deep audit of the existing 100+ projects, performed competitive analyses of other humanitarian organizations, and collaborated with stakeholders to define a set of top-level categories that were both concise and memorable.

Outcome

The new taxonomy streamlined the way Embracing the World communicates its mission, not only on the website but also in widely distributed print materials and volunteer training programs. With a clearer, more cohesive language, volunteers became stronger ambassadors, and the organization was better positioned to engage global audiences, funders, and media. The project helped shift how Embracing the World framed its identity—aligning its public narrative with the depth and impact of its humanitarian work.
